Ghost sightings and hauntings are nothing new to New Orleans and the French Quarter, an area known for historic sites and centuries-old buildings, some dating back to 1718 when the city was founded. What many people might not know is that some of the original residents and visitors of historic New Orleans never left town. After all, New Orleans is said to be the most haunted city in America.

The hauntings at the Dauphine Orleans vary from Civil War soldiers to their well dressed “ladies-of-the-evening.” The epicenter is May Baily’s Place. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, May Baily’s was one of the better known bordellos in the wildly infamous red-light district known as Storyville. Prostitution was legal in Storyville from 1898 to 1917. Today, May Baily’s Place now serves as the hotel bar at the Dauphine Orleans, where guests and employees have reported hauntings and sightings.

It has been said that on numerous nights, after the liquor vault has been locked up, something eerie has happened. Apparently, bartenders have come in to work the next day and found the liquor vault still locked with alcohol bottles out and in different positions around the bar! Reports over the years indicate that there is perchance more than one ghost that lingers inside the bar. One spirit is believed to be that of a Creole soldier, perhaps a patron of the former brothel, who wanders through the courtyard wearing a military uniform.

Another entity is a female, who seems very whimsical and a bit disturbed. Select guests have reported catching a lightening-fast glimpse of her dancing across the courtyard. It’s believed that she might have been employed by the brothel and eventually became an alcoholic, which was common during that era. In fact, it is believed that the spirits of people who were addicted during their life may remain earthbound because of their strong attachment to their addiction.

The Dauphine Orleans Hotel and May Baily’s Place are located in the heart of the French Quarter, just blocks from numerous other reputedly haunted locales, including the Bourbon Orleans Hotel (a sister property,) the LaLaurie Mansion, the  Beauregard-Keyes House and the Saint Louis Cathedral. The red light, the memorabilia and the Baily name are not all that remain of an era that made even decadent Old New Orleans blush.

In days gone by, the white linen suit in New Orleans was a summer time necessity. Thanks to modern conveniences like air conditioning and some may argue a diminishing sense of style, the white linen suit has become a much rarer sight these days. Thankfully there are at least two days a year you can count on seeing block after block of glorious white linen suits on the men and matching white dresses on the women: Whitney White Linen Night and Dirty Linen Night. Whitney White Linen Night – Imagine a block full of art galleries all having an opening on the same night. Now stock these openings with food and drinks from amazing restaurants like GW Fins, Baru, The Bombay Club, Theo’s Pizza, Cafe Adelaide and more. Sprinkle in some music and make it all free. Pretty cool little picture, huh? Now multiply that by 5, and you’ve got yourself White Linen Night in a nutshell. Referred to as “Soho in the South,” 5 blocks of Julia Street open for art, food and fun on August 6 from 6-9 p.m. The party keeps on rolling for a mere $10 at the Contemporary Arts Center from 9-11 p.m.! Just don’t take your suit to the wash when you get home, because you’ll need it the following week.

In fact, attendees are encouraged to wear their stained white linens from the week before! While few actually do, the food and drinks themes tend to follow suit with dirty rice and dirty martinis making regular appearances along Royal Street. While Dirty Linen Night offers no official after party, I’m sure its French Quarter location lends itself to more than a few unofficial after parties!

If there was a city that could pull off orchestrating its own version of one of the world’s most famous events, it’s New Orleans.  After running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, the “Padrino” or founding godfather, decided to make it happen in New Orleans.  In 2007, he and a group of friends founded the NOLA Bulls and so  San Fermin in Nueva Orleans began. Buzz spread so quickly that, five years later, 8,000-10,000 runners are expected to turn out for this year’s San Fermin in Nueva Orleans festival.

The running of the bulls takes place July 9 2011 and the “bulls” are hundreds of  roller derby girls on roller skates, decked with scary horns and large inflatable. Run at your own risk, these bulls are fierce! The run is free and open to the public.  The only rule is to wear white with a red cloth around the neck and waist.
